Should I take pregnancy multivitamins?
As long as you're having a healthy pregnancy, there is only one vitamin you're advised to take as a supplement: the B vitamin folic acid.
You shouldn't need to take supplements to get the rest of your vitamins and minerals. All you need to do is make sure you have a variety of healthy foods. A balanced diet is the best way to get the nutrients you and your baby need.
You shouldn't need to take supplements to get the rest of your vitamins and minerals. All you need to do is make sure you have a variety of healthy foods. A balanced diet is the best way to get the nutrients you and your baby need.
These healthy foods should include the four main food groups:
- Fruit and vegetables. These can be fresh, frozen, tinned or dried. Try to have five portions a day.
- Starchy, filling foods (carbohydrates), such as bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. Base your meals around starchy foods, and ideally, choose wholegrain options.Protein-rich foods, such as meat, fish, eggs and pulses. These foods are also good sources of iron.Dairy foods, such as milk, cheese and yoghurt, which contain calcium.
Dairy products, along with sea fish and sea salt are all good sources of iodine. You need plenty of iodine in your diet to help your baby's brain development.
Try not to have too many fatty or sugary foods and drinks. They may fill you up in the short term, but they won't give you the minerals and vitamins you need.
What should a pregnancy supplement contain?
Most pregnancy multivitamins give you 100 per cent of the recommended daily allowance of all the essential vitamins and most minerals.
Never take more than the recommended dose, which is usually one supplement a day. Taking megadoses of certain vitamins can be harmful to you and your baby.
Pregnancy multivitamins don't include retinol, the animal form of vitamin A, which can be toxic to unborn babies in large doses. If they contain vitamin A at all, it will be the type of vitamin A that occurs in plants. This is called betacarotene and is safe for your baby.
If you choose to take a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement during your pregnancy, make sure it has the vitamins that are essential for your pregnancy.
You should take a 400mcg folic acid supplement every day during the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy. Even if you don't take a multivitamin, take this one supplement during your first trimester.
As well as taking folic acid, you should also eat plenty of foods containing folate, which is the natural form of folic acid. Folate is in green vegetables and pulses. Many breads and breakfast cereals also have added folic acid.
Taking folic acid can lower the risk of your baby developing a defect in his spinal cord (neural tube defect). The neural tube defect spina bifida happens when nerves in the spinal cord are exposed and damaged.
In some cases, a much higher dose of folic acid is recommended. If you already have a child with neural tube defect, or if you take certain medicines, see your doctor. She'll be able to prescribe a higher dose for you.

What other supplements might I need?
You'll have blood tests during your pregnancy, which will tell your doctor whether you're getting enough iron. If your doctor finds you to be too low in iron (anaemic), she may prescribe iron supplements.
You need plenty of iron, because the amount of blood in your body is increasing all the time. This extra blood supports your growing baby.
Your body will help you get the extra iron you need. It adjusts to help you absorb more iron from food while you're pregnant. Even so, try to have iron-rich foods, such as meat or pulses.

Where do I get antenatal multivitamins?
You can buy antenatal supplements at pharmacies, supermarkets and online. Your doctor will prescribe supplements for you if she thinks you need them for a medical reason. Otherwise, you can save money by buying own-brand supplements. Many doctors and midwives agree that own brands work just as well as branded kinds.
Before buying antenatal supplements, read the label and be sure you understand what each supplement contains.
